A mundane message film.

Goundamani's 49 O is a mundane message film which is masquerading as a social drama. The film goes full-on preaching mode very frequently without making us root for the characters.

Goundamani’s 49 O is a mundane message film which is masquerading as a social drama. The film goes full-on preaching mode very frequently without making us root for the characters. The story is about how the lands of debt-ridden, hard-working farmers are illegally grabbed by businessmen and politicians for personal gains. While director Aarokiyadoss’s intentions are honest on paper, the transformation on screen needs more research and sensitivity, which the film precisely lacks.

When local politicians become aware of a railway station which is being planned in their village, they persuade and exploit the farmers to grab their lands by taking advantage of their financial instability. Goundamani, who realizes the tactics of politicians, spearheads the struggle of the farmers and reiterates them to never sell their land. What follows is a cat and mouse game between the villagers and the local politician which builds up to the assembly election.

Fouling cry on electoral rules needs to be put forward in a convincing, matured way. What we get instead is a jabber fest which goes on and on. Goundamani’s screen presence, his witty wisecracks, his trademark body language are the only solacing aspects of an otherwise hapless film/

While the first half delivers a fair amount of comical lines here and there, the second half is quite unendurable and tests the patience of viewers to no end.

49 o is definitely a missed opportunity considering the fact that it marks the comeback of the comedy king to the silverscreen after a long time.
