Ulkuthu is an adequately enjoyable action thriller helmed by Caarthick Raju, who made an assured directorial debut in Thirudan Police. Despite treading the tried and tested path, Caarthick has managed to hook the viewers to a reasonable extent with his presentation and the raw backdrop.

Set in a fishing hamlet, Ulkuthu revolves around the story of Raja (played by Dinesh), an unassuming youngster who locks horns with Saravanan (Dhilip Subbarayan), the ruthless gangster son of a local don Kaaka Mani (Sharath Lohitashwa), after giving his henchman a good beating.

Although the film takes its own sweet time to dive into the story, Bala Saravanan keeps the proceedings light with his witty counters.

With a formulaic tale, what Caarthick Raju has done with the screenplay deserves mention. He quite succeeded in maintaining the suspense behind the motive of Raja’s character, but once the secret is out, the film begins to stumble. However, Caarthick has carved out some really lovely situations out of the ordinary scenes in the movie, which headlines friendship and loyalty. The backstory of Dinesh may be run-of-the-mill, but the emotions are handled maturely.

The highlight of Ulkuthu is stunt master Dhilip Subbarayan’s realistically staged action sequences, which fairly engage viewers throughout the second half. Dhilip has also excelled equally as an actor in the role of Saravanan in the film.

Toting up, Ulkuthu is undoubtedly a watchable revenge drama and stands out from the regular commercial potboilers.
