Vivid, exciting commercial soundtrack
Summary : AR Rahman might not be in his best form here, but with Mersal, he surely delivers an enthralling soundtrack that has one of each kind. Lyricist Vivek needs to be appreciated for his efforts here, showing the change in the different kinds of music that comes at every turn. With colourful, rich filming, the songs should be a sure-fire treat onscreen giving the audience a big basket of reasons to celebrate.
Cast: Vijay, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen
Music: AR Rahman
Label: Sony Music
Aalaporaan Tamizhan: Singers – Sathyaprakash, Kailash Kher, Deepak, AV Pooja
With a lot of layers embedded, AR Rahman hits it big with this highly enjoyable celebratory number controlled by four variant singers. Sathyaprakash aces the goosebump-worthy pure Tamizh lines, while Kailash Kher gets the high pitches. The seamless transitions from the drums to the melody are what make it a song to remember for long. Our PICK, straight away.
Neethanae: Singers – Shreya Ghoshal, AR Rahman
A simple, harmless melody from AR Rahman where he shines better as a singer than a composer. Shreya Ghoshal does her job nicely as well, but it’s the composition which lacks an X-factor and ends up as something on the bar.
Maacho: Singers – Sid Sriram, Shweta Mohan
An instantly interesting techno track that is unique in both the lyrical and the musical ways. Sid Sriram aces a stylish rendition that he is famous for, while Shweta Mohan comes to the fore with perfect pronunciation. Seemingly a big chartbuster this. The next PICK.
Mersal Arasan: Singers – Naresh Iyer, Vishwaprasadh, GV Prakash Kumar, Sharanya Srinivas
AR Rahman brings us a surprise, going local like anything. It’s been long since we had such a composition from him, packed with street instruments, slangs and much more. GV Prakash lets his energy level fly in full force, and the song despite the uneven organization, has a definite spark. Visual carnival possibly. The final PICK.
